Guinevere Among Top Three Finalists for PhD Supervisor of the Year
We are proud to share that Dr. Guinevere Lageveen-Kammeijer was selected as one of the three finalists for the 2026 PhD Supervisor of the Year Award at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Groningen.
The award recognizes supervisors who make an outstanding contribution to the professional and personal development of their PhD candidates. What makes this recognition particularly special is that Guinevere was nominated by her own PhD researchers, whose feedback and experiences contributed to her selection among the final three candidates.
Within the SUGAR Lab, scientific excellence goes hand in hand with creating a supportive and collaborative research environment. Guinevere's approach to supervision emphasizes scientific independence, critical thinking, open communication, and providing researchers with the confidence and freedom to develop their own ideas.
Equally important is recognizing the individual behind the researcher, including the challenges, ambitions, and personal circumstances that accompany an academic career. Guinevere credits her own mentors, particularly Prof. Manfred Wuhrer, as an important influence on her approach to supervision, and emphasizes that mentoring is a continuous learning process in which supervisors also learn from their students. Although she did not receive the final award, being recognized by the researchers she supervises makes this an especially meaningful achievement.
A heartfelt thank you to all PhD candidates, past and present, for their nomination, trust, and continued contributions to the SUGAR Lab!
