Science outreach at Vuurvliegen Groningen

How do you explain to a room full of 9–12-year-olds that you can measure things you cannot even see?

Science outreach activity by the SUGAR Lab during Vuurvliegen Groningen

During Vuurvliegen Groningen, organized by Centrum JongerenCommunicatie Chemie, the SUGAR Lab had the opportunity to introduce children to the world of analytical chemistry, biomedical research, and scientific discovery.

Using stories, examples, and interactive demonstrations, we explored how analytical chemistry helps us understand molecules that are invisible to the naked eye. One of the highlights was a chromatography-inspired obstacle course built to make separation science more tangible and accessible for young audiences.

The curiosity, enthusiasm, and thoughtful questions from the children made this a truly inspiring experience and a wonderful reminder that science becomes most impactful when it can be shared in an accessible and engaging way.

Many thanks to the organizers, fellow researchers, and everyone involved in creating such an inspiring afternoon of science communication and outreach.
